5 Reasons Why I Would NEVER Join an MLM Company

This weekend I became intrigued with MLMs. It appears every time I try to network, I come across a “business opportunity.” I started thinking back to my first introduction to them. It all started back in 2010 with Vector Marketing. They would leave flyers on the cars of movie goers with catch phrases such as “earn income.” Fast forward to 15 years later and MLMs are still stating that you can earn lots of money and all you must do is talk about a product and recruit.

During my weekend rabbit hole exploration, I have come to dislike MLM companies even more than before. At first, I thought it was not for everyone, but it was harmless. I was wrong!!! These companies are far from harmless. They prey on the vulnerabilities of those seeking better lifestyles. Maybe this post will help you or someone you know to AVOID THEM AT ALL COST!!!

Reason #1

They are structured around New Age beliefs. The most recent encounters I have had with MLM companies have been with Christian women. Hearing them talk about Jesus and financial literacy caught my attention. I just knew I had to network with them, so that we could help our community. I did not initially know I would be talking to someone in an MLM. I thought I just had found someone with a common interest.

These beautiful ladies, in my opinion, are not aware of what they are involved in. The different companies talk about manifestation, positive thinking, and you being in control of your own outcomes. All of which, are teachings of the New Age. The energy that they give off is so powerful and influential that you just want to be around it. You lose sight of what is going on around you because you feel so good and motivated. It is only later that you realize you were sold a dream.

Reason #2

There is nothing passive about it! The MLM companies love to talk about how you can make money from home. They love to say it is passive and less work than your current 9-5. They say how you can make thousands of dollars part-time, but if you pay attention, this is all false. Investopedia defines passive income as income that is earned with little or no effort. Within an MLM, you must recruit constantly if you are going to make any real money. They also have meetings multiple times throughout the day to keep you “motivated” and working toward bringing in more people. From what I have seen, they work harder than any job I have ever worked. They even work on the weekends!

Reason #3

The promise of making “a lot” of money is not true. Most of the people who work in this type of system are not making money. The true money makers are those who are at the top; the people who created the company or have been around from the beginning. Everyone who is working in this type of company is NOT A MILLIONAIRE and, 9 times out of 10, never will be. It is a system that is set up to fail. You will constantly work harder and harder for money that is almost impossible to make. Do not get me wrong, there are some people who have gotten enough people under them to do well, but this is not always the case. It’s more of an exception and not the rule.

Reason #4

YOU ARE NOT A BUSINESS OWNER!!! They love to talk about being your own boss, but this is far from the case. If the top people decide to stop the business, there is nothing you can do about it. You do not set prices, make executive decisions, or even have a true idea of the accounting. You cannot pass this business on to your children. It is not yours! You are a contractor at best.

Reason #5

This last reason is strictly for financial MLMs. The forex, insurance, credit restoration, and other types of companies. They talk boldly about financial topics and are very believable, but if you examine them a little closer, their contractors do not have real knowledge of finances. They are not really teaching people how to trade. They are not teaching people how to build their credit and not make the same mistakes they made previously. They are not helping people to understand how money is a tool and should not just be used for consumption. They give their people great scripts to follow and tell them to touch people’s hearts with their “why” stories. They then tell them to make sure they show themselves living lavish lifestyles and showing off “all the money that they are making.” They are not telling them to invest and to make sure they have an emergency fund. They want to attract people to the “wealth.”

I could go on all day about this stuff. I really hate that so many people are being taken advantage of because of the desire to make money quickly. One thing is for sure; the Bible is a guide for EVERYTHING. If you need a better idea of how to handle your money and finances, the Bible should be your starting point.

“Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.”

Proverbs 13:11 NLT
