3 Pregnancy Expenses Nobody Warned Me About
Recently, I gave birth to my third child. This experience truly was unlike anything I had experienced before. It feels strange to say that since he is my third child, but from day one of pregnancy, things were different. The pregnancy was more difficult, and the birth required emergency intervention. Despite all of that, I am happy to say that HE IS HERE! He is beautiful, loving, and, like his siblings, already has a personality that I absolutely adore.
With that being said, my birth experience is not what this story is about. That is a story for another day. Today, I want to focus on some of the costs involved with becoming a parent. If this is something you are preparing to experience or hope to experience one day, I want to bring awareness to a few of the less obvious expenses that can come along with pregnancy and parenthood.
When most people think about the cost of having a baby, they think about diapers, formula, cribs, and car seats. While those expenses are certainly important to plan for, some of the biggest financial surprises can happen long before your baby arrives. Here are three expenses that caught me off guard.
The first expense that may not get much thought is the cost of toilet paper! I'm not talking about the price itself, but rather the increased amount you'll need during pregnancy. We have a Sam's Club membership, and those 45 large rolls that used to last for months suddenly disappeared much faster. Ladies, be prepared for the reality of an overactive bladder! It may seem like a small thing, but those extra trips to the bathroom add up over nine months.
On a more serious note, another expense that is often overlooked is what insurance does not cover. Many people simply check to see if prenatal care is included in their benefits and assume they are fully covered. However, prenatal care can mean different things depending on the insurance plan.
Take the time to review your benefits carefully so you understand exactly what is and is not covered. Ask questions about recommended tests, procedures, and ultrasounds. If something is not covered, find out whether it is medically necessary and what your out-of-pocket costs will be before moving forward. Understanding your coverage ahead of time can help you avoid unexpected medical bills and make informed decisions throughout your pregnancy.
Lastly, if you believe that time equals money, do not underestimate the impact that extreme fatigue can have during pregnancy. While every pregnancy is different, fatigue can significantly affect your ability to work and maintain your normal routine. You may need more time off than anticipated, receive less commission-based income, or face unpaid leave if your employer's policies are limited.
During my first trimester, I was exhausted beyond anything I had experienced before. Even the amount of caffeine considered safe during pregnancy seemed to make no difference. Your body is working overtime to grow a new life, and rest is not a luxury—it is a necessity. Make sure to plan for the possibility that you may need more downtime than expected.
Becoming a parent is truly a blessing from God. However, unexpected expenses can create stress during a season that already comes with significant physical and emotional changes. My hope is that this post helps prepare you and your family for some of the less obvious costs you may encounter along the way.
When planning for a baby, don't just budget for diapers, wipes, and nursery furniture. Make room in your budget for unexpected medical expenses, increased household costs, and the possibility of reduced income if pregnancy affects your ability to work. Planning ahead can help relieve financial stress and allow you to focus more on enjoying the journey into parenthood.
Above all, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and trust Him to guide you through every season. As believers, we are called to be wise stewards while trusting God with the things that are beyond our control. No matter what unexpected expenses or challenges come your way, remember His promise:
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." — Matthew 6:33
